House in Ibiza

Casa Ibiza is located in a privileged plot of land. Its location not only offers unobstructed panoramic views of the island’s imposing nature. We believe that any operation in this place must be carried out with the utmost care and respect.

This project began as a renovation of a well-conceived house of local architecture, with varied elements and forms of great value, and it turned into a project of subtle improvement of the existing structure. It is a house that is imbued in the landscape, that blends into the surroundings, crowning the topography of the place.

Intrinsically, the project accompanies the clear intuitions of the first construction, revalues its strengths, and improves the weak points without losing the current essence of the house.

“I usually decide to partially construct on the hard part, without touching the rocks and just putting the building on them, without destroying them, incorporating them in the walls instead, as if I was looking for a kind of kinship, an ancient belonging to the place […]. Houses cling to the rocks; they become a support element and part of it […] “They are like the wrinkled skin of a prehistoric animal, and this can be felt”.

— Alberto Ponis

A window to the sea

With the two arches that dominate the existing house, other parts of the project were built. The pool changes color to better adapt to the surroundings, and the lime of the facades is recovered throughout the building.

Inside, the current distribution is recognized and the house is divided into two areas: the night area, associated with views of the forest, a place of rest and shade; and the day area that faces the sea to capture more natural light and direct towards the unobstructed views of the Mediterranean. These spaces are where the social life of the house takes place.

A scene where architecture fades into the atmosphere amidst the grandeur of the place and the presence of the forest.

We recognize that the central space inside the house enhances and revalues its essence; it is fundamentally a courtyard house. Its natural condition is to be a meeting place, so it remains the heart of the house: a flexible space that is available for whatever the day or night requires.

“The ultimate goal of the architect…is to create a paradise. Every house, every product of architecture… should be a fruit of our endeavour to build an earthly paradise for people.”

—Alvar Aalto

Native vegetation shows us the authenticity of the place we are in and the respect that the landscape deserves.
